Eating clean is more than just eating grass-fed beef or cage-free chicken, it’s about putting a focus on foods that enrich our bodies with powerful nutrients…these foods are plants! We like to buy organic or local when we can.

The incredible power of plants is catching on, so stock your fridge! Fruits and veggies are vital for the function of our bodies. Plants are enriched with vitamins and minerals like calcium, fiber, iron, potassium, vitamin A and C. They help lower the risk of many diseases and leave us feeling good and energized. 

Incorporating more plants into your diet won’t just leave you feeling healthy on the inside, but helps you look healthy as well. Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories and fats, so you’re able to eat more without guilt. Hey, not to mention all the color they add to your plate!

Don’t worry, we’re not talking about going completely vegan here. Simply making a few changes can transform your diet to a clean, whole-foods way of eating. Here are a few healthy ideas to mix things up.

No “Got Milk”
Dairy is being outshined by plant or nut-based milk. The options continue to expand and they have different flavors and consistencies. They’re great to add to a cup of coffee, use while baking, or drink straight out of a glass. Contrary to milk advertising campaigns, cutting back on dairy products can help with bone health.  So give some of the new varieties like almond, cashew, flax, or hemp milk a try.

Substitute Meat with Beans
Go easy on the meat! Red meat is high in saturated fats, which raises the level of cholesterol in the blood. Limiting the consumption of red meat can help reduce the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Throw some beans into the mix. Beans are a spectacular switch from meat and are affordable. Meat often plays the role of adding texture to the dish. Swap meat out for beans or legumes and the dish will still have texture, then add flavorful chopped herbs and spices to make it tasty. 

Fruit Over Candy
Craving sugar is to be expected. We all have a sweet tooth once in a while, but what are you eating to satisfy that craving?  Most of us naturally relate sugar strictly to candy or decadent desserts. Frequently we consume our sugar through alcoholic beverages, dairy products or starchy foods. Try relieving your sugar craving with a piece of juicy fresh fruit to give you an energy boost next time. 

These small changes have the potential to improve your health without turning your diet upside down. Remember you can’t eat clean without eating green!
